Ramaphosa to address quarterly Question and Answer session in National Assembly on Friday

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa will have his quarterly Question and Answer session in the National Assembly on Friday.

Three of the six questions are from African National Congress (ANC) members.

They’ve asked about the advancement of social cohesion and nation building, the economic reconstruction plan and policy interventions to ensure the turnaround of local government.

The President will also face tough questions from opposition parties regarding the appointment of Ministers, the Marikana killings and the protection of people who don’t want to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

ANC MP Tidimalo Legwase wants to know about additional measures government will take, alongside Chapter nine institutions and others supporting democracy, to advance social cohesion and nation building.

This is in view of the recent social unrest that she says exposed underlying racial tensions in the country. Ramaphosa has been criticised following his recent cabinet reshuffle.

President Ramaphosa reshuffled the Cabinet earlier this year:

The criticism has ranged from those who say he failed to let go of non-performing ministers to those who say he appointed people with questionable backgrounds.

Some feel that new Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, still has questions to answer regarding his resignation as Deputy Minister of Economic Development in 2012.

Godongwana resigned amid a scandal around his alleged involvement in a company that defrauded clothing factory workers of R100-million of their pension fund money.

The President can expect Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen to raise follow-up questions regarding the appointment of ministers.

African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader Kenneth Meshoe’s question seems to be a continuation of his anti-vaccination crusade.

He wants the President to say what steps government is taking to protect unvaccinated employees who are given ultimatums by their employers.

He’s also asked if there will be protection for tenants who face losing their accommodation if they don’t get vaccinated.

National Freedom Party MP Ahmed Shaik-Emam wants to know the reasons for the delay in bringing about a resolution to the outstanding matters of compensation for victims of the Marikana killings.

He will also ask when those responsible will be held accountable for the deaths of the miners to ensure closure for the affected families.
