The National Assembly has elected African National Congress President Cyril Ramaphosa as the President of South Africa.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogeng presided over the election process.

The election of Ramaphosa follows the resignation of Jacob Zuma on Wednesday night.

Zuma had been in a power struggle with Ramaphosa, his Deputy President since in 2014.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has saluted former President Jacob Zuma for enhancing the relationship between Kenya and South Africa.

Kenyatta has commended the ANC for showing the importance of strong political parties.

In January, Kenyatta was on a state visit to South Africa – the first foreign trip since he was sworn in November for his second and final term.

During the visit he met both Zuma and Ramaphosa.
