President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a strong pitch to international investors based in Canada. He was addressing investors in Toronto before heading to Quebec, where G7 leaders will hold an Outreach Summit with developing nations.

Ramaphosa told the investors that his administration is placing the economy on a new path of transformation and greater policy certainty, while improving the governance of state-owned and state-led institutions.

He’s also thanked Canadian investors for not losing faith in the country.

“A number of you are already invested in SA for which we thank you. And you’ve stayed with SA over many years and some of you were about to lose hope and confidence but we’re pleased that you stayed the course and you’re still investors in our country.”

“It’s also for that reason that we felt we should come here on our way to Quebec to the G7 meeting. We’re meeting in the midst of a global economy is showing signs of recovery and improved growth, which is wonderful. However, it remains vulnerable, with a global trade war looming, a return to protectionism but also the weakening of the multilateral rules-based international trade system and other multilateral organisations.”

“This for us is worrying. South Africa sees Canada as a strategic partner as we navigate through all these difficult and worrying issues that have to be addressed by the world and hopefully the G7 meeting will be able to find solutions for some of these very difficult issues.”
