Ramaphosa lauds smooth conference while media complain of ill-treatment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Newly-elected ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed satisfaction over the party elective conference, currently underway at the Nasrec Expo centre in Johannesburg.

Ramaphosa engaged with conference attendees and vendors during a walkabout around the centre.

Ramaphosa has also thanked the media for covering the event.

“Let me start off by thanking all of you as members of the media. We thank you for being the medium through which you help us exercise our transparency. We’ve got our small and medium enterprises. So, all in all, the conference is going very, very well and the leadership that has been chosen is a unity leadership. Things are going extremely well. They could not go better.”

Meanwhile, the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) is set to meet with the ANC after a senior journalist was pushed around and his credentials removed earlier on Tuesday.

Sam Mkokeli of Bloomberg and Chairperson of Sanef’s subcommittee on media freedom says he asked how long journalists still had to wait for a walkabout with the new with Ramaphosa because they were waiting in the sun.

Several journalists have now come forward saying the various security agencies have threatened, pushed, manhandled and assaulted them since the beginning of the conference on Saturday.
