Ramaphosa honours exceptional South Africans and foreign nationals

President Cyril Ramaphosa has bestowed National Orders on a range of South Africans and others who have contributed to South Africa’s democracy.

The ceremony took place at the presidential guest house, Mhlambandlopfu, in Pretoria.

The orders of Luthuli, the Baobab and Ikhamanga have been presented to people who have distinguished themselves and contributed to the country in varous fields, including politics, journalism, the arts and sports

“Our freedom opened windows of opportunity for many to chase their dreams for many to excel to succeed and in so doing to inspire others to reach beyond what they imagined was possible themselves. We dedicate this year’s ceremony to the memory of the father of our nation former president Nelson Mandela, who more than any other embodied the spirit and the meaning of these national orders,” says Ramaphosa.

 

Those honoured include, cricketer Hashim Amla, musician Sipho Hotstix Mabuza, Acress Lilian Dube, struggle heroes, Zondeni Sobukwe, Mary Fitzgeral, Rahima Moosa and former deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke.  Former leaders from the Southern African Development Community region including Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Ketumile Masire of Botswana and Samuel Nujoma of Namibia as well as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia were also honored. They are amongst others honored for amongst others supporting South Africa during liberation struggle and promoting peace on the continent
