Ramaphosa expected in Mahikeng on Friday

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected back in the country early on Friday morning after he cut short his visit to the United Kingdom due to the ongoing violent protests in Mahikeng in the North West.

He will be meeting with ANC leaders in Mahikeng to discuss possible solutions.

The President was attending a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London.

North West police had their hands full on Thursday night as they attempted to calm the volatile situation in Mahikeng.

Some protesters again attempted to loot businesses in the area.

Foreign nationals were attacked and their shops looted on Thursday as violent protests intensified in and around the capital.

A protester says: “We are not looting, this is just natural behaviour of the public when there is actually no governance. People tend to take the rule into their hands and this can only be informed or created by the lack of the political leadership in the area.”

The violence that erupted on Wednesday has led to a complete lockdown of the provincial capital as more communities have joined the protests demanding the resignation of Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

All the main roads leading to the town have been barricaded.
