Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the late Joburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo was an outstanding leader with a great deal of talent and visionary leadership.

He was speaking at the Matongo family house in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, earlier this afternoon.

The president was there to pay his last respect.

The Joburg mayor died in a car accident on Saturday night after spending the whole day with President Ramaphosa campaigning for the ANC in Soweto.

He will be buried tomorrow.

Ramaphosa says in Matongo the country’s biggest metro was in good hands.

“I am saddened to hear to have heard the news of a man like him dying so tragically in an accident. But we’d like his spirit to rest in peace. The work that he was doing must go on and we are going to carry on with the vision that he had for the city. He had run the finances of the city very well and we will continue in his footsteps,” says Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa, who will not attend the funeral, says Matongo abhorred corruption.

He has urged his party members to work hard to win Johannesburg in the November 1st local elections, in honour of Matongo.
