Ramaphosa cuts UK trip short

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa has cut short his visit to the UK to meet with African National Congress (ANC) leaders over the on-going violence and chaos that has erupted in Mahikeng in the North West. A statement from the ANC says he will address an urgent meeting convened with structures of the ruling party in the provincial capital.

The president was leading a South African delegation to Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London. Ramaphosa says he has noted with serious concern reports of clashes between protesters with police this week.

In a statement, Ramaphosa who is currently in London, has indicated that he will be cutting his trip short.  He is expected to visit Mahikeng on Friday and has further called on law-enforcement agencies to exercise maximum restraint in execution of their duties.

At least one person has been killed in the on-going protests in Mahikeng as the violence in the provincial capital and surrounding areas escalates.

Meanwhile, the North West University’s Mahikeng campus has been temporarily closed due to the violence.  A visit by the Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, to the university has also been cancelled.

She was supposed to officiate the launch of the Mahikeng Astronomical Telescope at the Mahikeng campus this weekend.
