President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on traditional leaders to play an active role in encouraging citizens in rural areas to register for the upcoming elections.

The national and provincial elections will be held on May 8.

Ramaphosa was speaking during the opening of the annual meeting of the National House of Traditional Leaders in Parliament on Tuesday.

“In just three months time, we on the 8th of May, South Africans will be going to the polls in national and provincial election. We urge traditional leaders of the country to continue to encourage all eligible votes to register and to participate on these elections. We call on traditional leaders to promote free and fair campaigning and ensure that tall voters are given an opportunity to participate in these democratic elections so that they can exercise their own democratic rights.”
