Ramaphosa calls on citizens to restore ANC to its former glory

Reading Time: 2 minutes

African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all South Africans to unite behind unifying the movement, and to restore it to its former glory.

Ramaphosa was addressing thousands of the ANC led alliance members during the Cosatu’s cadre’s forum in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga on Friday.

His visit to Mpumalanga is the first of its kind since embarking on a campaign trail for the ANC presidential post.

He told those in attendance to make sure that South Africa moves forward with Radical Economic Transformation.

Receiving a rousing welcome from the thousands of locals who came to support him in his ANC presidential campaign ahead of the elective conference in December, Ramaphosa didn’t mince his words in calling for transparency during the process of electing national leaders.

He says those calling for unity must show it through action and not by lip service.

Ramaphosa says it will take legitimate leaders for the ANC to refrain from factionalism, which leads to corruption and self-enrichment.

Ramaphosa’s call for unity has been echoed by the South African Communist Party (SACP) in Mpumalanga. It’s general secretary, Bonakele Majuba says they are noticing those who are making the call for unity fashionable all of a sudden.

He says it will take the current Deputy President to unite the ANC and its alliance partners.

Meanwhile, Cosatu, which organised the cadre’s forum says it’s disappointing to learn that there are those within the alliance who seek to deviate from the ANC tradition – which has seen deputy presidents automatically taking the reins of being the President.

Ramaphosa has assured the members that if the ANC is united after the December conference, the focus will be on re-igniting the economy, and thus continue to make sure that there are more job opportunities for the youth.

He says it’s all in the hands of South Africans to make sure that things change for the better.

Ramaphosa is scheduled to continue with his presidential campaign in Nelspruit in two weeks’ time.
