President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) for its diversity.

Ramaphosa is addressing the SANDF’s Armed Forces Day celebration in Kimberley.

The day commemorates servicemen who have lost their lives on duty and the sinking of the SS Mendi in 1917.

Ramaphosa says the SANDF is a reflection of what a democratic South Africa looks like.

“When we look at our armed forces, what we see is a manifestation of the South Africa that belongs to all of us black and white, which our constitution directs us to build,” says Ramaphosa.

Meanwhile, SANDF Chief, General Solly Shoke says, “The 21st of February was chosen as a result of, you’ll recall that in 1917 we lost over 600 soldiers in the English channel. That’s why we chose that day but mainly we pay respect to men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.”
