More rains forecast for Gauteng amid floods

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As the heavy rain continues to pour across Gauteng, emergency services personnel have been responding to a number of emergencies in and around Johannesburg.

On Friday, an elderly woman has been taken to hospital after her house was flooded in Klipspruit, Soweto.

Emergency Services workers were called in to help carry the woman out in a stretcher.

Several parts of Johannesburg and surrounding areas have been flooded due to the continuing heavy downpours. Some roads are closed to traffic with bridges flooded and traffic lights not working.

Many residents in Kliptown cannot return, as their homes remain water-logged.

Those less affected, spent the day mopping up their homes, hoping for a new sunny day.

Kliptown is where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955. Desperate for decent housing, residents in the area feel neglected. They regularly take to the streets in protest against poor service-delivery.

Mopping up operation in  Alexandra

Residents of Alexandra in the north of Johannesburg are mopping up after heavy rains flooded their homes. Families living near the Jukskei river bank had their shacks flooded after the river burst its banks.

Many children in the area did not go to school as their uniforms and books were wet.

Stjwetla informal settlement next to the Juskei river is always the worst hit area in Johannesburg. Fortunately there was no life lost this time around, but many residents say their belongings have been damaged by the water.

Residents are washing their blankets and clothes which are all wet because the river overflowed and the water seeping into their homes.

More rain has been forecast over the weekend and the residents say there is nothing they can do as they have nowhere else to go. It can only mean they will once again sleep on wet mattresses and wet floors and wake up to wash everything all over again.

Meanwhile, several roads and low lying bridges are closed in Pretoria following localised flooding. M24 between R55 and Valhalla has been closed due to a sinkhole.

The Bridges at Rabie and End streetst Main and Nelmapius have been closed.

Areas that are more flooded in Centurion are, Rooihuiskraal near Uitsig High School, Nelmapius road near licensing department, Lenchen and West avenues, Club View bridge near Pepper Chair, West Avenue near SuperSport Park.

Motorists are warned to avoid the mentioned areas. Emergency services are monitoring the flooded routes.

A number of Mamelodi residents have been evacuated after their shacks were flooded. Earlier, three motorists were stuck in flood waters on West Avenue road in Centurion.

Some parts of the city have been hit by power outages.
