Heritage Day is a Public Holiday on which South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their cultural heritage and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.
Nelson Mandela used the phrase “rainbow nation” to describe South Africa’s diverse cultures, customs, traditions, histories, and languages. September 24 is a celebration of that diversity.

Heritage Day is about reminding us who we are, where we come from and where we are going to. We encourage everyone to eat our food, hear our music, see our our dances and experience our diverse and beautiful country.

SA Tourism shares their thoughts in 2010 on the significance of Heritage Day (September 24).

On 24 September 2010, South Africa celebrated national Heritage Day, promoting our cultural expressions and diverse heritage, which together contribute to building our nation. President Jacob Zuma delivered a keynote address at the national Heritage Day celebrations held at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.

A country’s heritage is all the qualities, traditions, or features of life there that have continued over many years and have been passed on from one generation to another. In South Africa we have a rich and diverse heritage, encompassing manycultures and traditions. Our landscape is truly unique, from the magic of the bush to the desolation of the Karoo.
