Religious organisations are heeding the call for community action for Nelson Mandela Day. The Brahma Kumaris spiritual centre will extend its monthly meditation to 67 minutes on the eve of the day. The Jewish community of South Africa is also getting involved by dropping off goods at the Great Park Synagogue in Houghton for the Afrika Tikkun NGO. The goods which range from toys and blankets to non-perishable foods, will be distributed to six different townships in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

SABC acting Group CEO, Phil Molefe, says Madiba’s legacy will stay indelible in people’s minds and his birthday should be celebrated every day. Molefe was speaking to Morning Live during on the First Anniversary of the SABC’s Touching Lives project which played a crucial role in the building of a dormitory at the Tembalethu School for the Disabled in Gugulethu Cape Town.
