The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is calling on drivers to postpone their trips if they are not urgent amid severe weather conditions, including snowfall, in parts of the province.

The R612 connecting Bulwer via Donnybrook, Ixopo, Highflats and Umzinto areas on the southern part of the province is closed to traffic due to snowfall.

Department Spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane says there has been a number of accidents due to slippery roads.

“Calling for extra caution on the road, we have been alerted by the Weather Services that some of the roads are very slippery. There is also some snowfall in many parts of the province –  mainly the areas that are across the Drakensberg mountains. As we speak right now, we can confirm that R612 is closed to traffic because of the snowfall and many other roads are also affected. We are calling for extra caution as our teams are already on the ground to make sure that they are able to respond to any eventuality and to any closure of the road. Already we have had few accidents that have been reported, however, we call for maximum care and caution from drivers to postpone their trips where it is not urgent,” says Ncalane.
