Government has set aside R6 billion in its 2018/19 for drought relief.

Severe conditions of drought are affecting large parts of the country especially the Western Cape. This is placing an extreme strain on the supply of water to nearly four million people in the City of Cape Town.

Malusi Gigaba says it will also provide short term relief grants and will allocate R473 million to provinces and municipalities over the next two years.

“We have amongst the highest levels per daily capital domestic water consumption levels in the world but also some of the highest levels of inequality in reliable access to water.”

“National government will continue to work with municipalities to respond effectively to the water crisis. Allocation for drought response funds for water infrastructure projects and EPWP will be made in the Adjustment Budget,” says Gigaba.
