The Department of Arts and Culture has set aside an amount of R20 million to honour South Africa’s living legends.

The Department has already made R10 million available, and the remaining half will be released in September.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa made the announcement at the Night of the Legends, a one-night special performance to honour the enormous contribution of South Africa’s Living Legends to the Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Mthethwa also used the event to launch the Living Legends Legacy Trust Endowment Fund and the Lesiba Ministerial Awards which will focus on honouring young and old artists.

He says, “These giants of our country lived because they had surrendered their very beings to the people. They lived because their very beings embodied love, hope, inspiration and a vision of our collective destination.”
