Pupils plant 100 trees at Durban’s Botanical Gardens

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Plant for the Planet has just completed planting 100 trees at the Botanical Gardens in Durban, with the help of local school pupils who are Climate Justice ambassadors. Co-ordinator Kjell Kuhne says the 100 trees are symbolic for the Climate Justice movement.

Some of the ambassadors are from the Corovora Primary School. They are part of 60 learners who attended a one day workshop to mobilise youth to add voices behind climate change initiatives. At the end of the workshop the learners took an oath to emabark on different inititaives to help save the world.

The learners have one activitity a month to conscientise others about climate change challenges. Corovora Primary School brought three pupils to today’s tree planting event and they planted seven trees, naming them. Some of the names thrown into the mix included Impilo (meaning life), Imvelo (nature) and Ithemba (hope). The visibily excited science environmental studies student said they will come back in a few years time to check on the progress of the trees they’ve planted.

All three learners are currently in grade seven and proudly say as they go to their new school next year, they will further mobilise others to join the fight against climate change.

On Monday, the organisation will conduct a one day workshop where the ambassadors will empower other children. The event to be held at the Green Hub is mainly aimed at educating the local Durban community.
