Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has strongly urged public representatives to take their oaths of office seriously.

The Chief Justice was speaking to the SABC ahead of the swearing-in of MPs on Wednesday which will be led by him.

The ANC will retain its majority in the sixth democratic parliament, but that advantage has substantially decreased.

Justice Mogoeng has told the public broadcaster that the judiciary will waste no time in dealing with those who fail to keep their promises to the South African public.

He says, “You have got to be reminded formally and by functionaries who if you fail to discharge your constitutional responsibilities properly, we’ll have to decide your fate. We are the judiciary. It’s a covenant, it is a public covenant which can never be broken.”

“You are saying as an adult to the South African public, I will do what is required of me, how dare you then do the opposite.”
