The Department of Public Enterprises has announced an interim board for South African Airways (SAA) with former cabinet minister Derek Hanekom as the interim board chair and non-executive director.

The department describes the board composition as highly skilled and diverse.

Finance professional Fathima Gany, former ACSA COO Fundi Sithebe and business strategist Mahlubi Mazwi are among the other eight non-executive directors.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan says his department recognises the challenges SAA has faced in the past and the importance of learning from those experiences to ensure the airline’s future success.

A look at what 2023 holds for SAA:

The other board members are Advocate Johannes Weapond, financial expert and chartered accountant Clarissa Appana, economist Dumisani Sangweni and academic and business strategist Professor John Lamola.

The interim board has been effective since 15 April 2023 and will serve until the introduction of the new shareholder, Takatso Consortium.

Public Enterprises says it is also reviewing the composition and skills of each of the SOEs under its mandate.
