Protesters gather outside Mugabe’s private residence

Reading Time: < 1 minute

About 100 people are demonstrating against President Robert Mugabe’s rule on the road leading to his private residence in Harare.

They are heeding the call by Zimbabwe’s War Veterans to occupy the streets and stage a sit-in to show Mugabe that he has to go.

The veterans plan mass marches in Harare and Bulawayo on Wednesday if necessary, following the success of last weekend’s protest in Harare.

Meanwhile in Parliament, MP’s are expected to table a motion to impeach Mugabe at Tuesday’s sitting.

The governing Zanu-PF party says all 230 of its MP’s will support an impeachment motion, meaning they only need the support of five opposition members for the required two-thirds majority.

Zimbabwe’s axed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda – both old liberation colleagues of Mugabe – are said to be planning meetings with him in efforts to persuade him to go.
