South Africa’s national cricket team has made a disastrous start to the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The Proteas were bundled out for a shocking 95 runs after being sent to bat first on day one of the first Test in Christchurch. In reply, the Kiwis ended the day on 116 for the loss of three wickets – with a lead of 21 runs.

It was simply an embarrassing performance from the Proteas with the bat in hand. Only four of South Africa’s batsmen managed to eke out double figures as Matt Henry dismantled the batting line-up. Henry the destroyer-in-chief produced record figures for the Black Caps. Recording the third-best figures for New Zealand in Test cricket, he took seven wickets for just 23 runs to help to roll the visitors out for just 95 runs.

New Zealand was a far more organised unit when they came out to bat, comfortably surpassing the Proteas total. Seamer Duanne Olivier took two scalps of captain Tom Latham for 15 and Devon Conway for 36 reducing the hosts to 111 for three. But they ended the day in the driving seat on 116 for three – 21 runs to the good.
