Progress in reopening PE refugee office

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The premises of the soon to open Port Elizabeth Refugee Reception offices have been officially handed over to the Department of Home Affairs in the Eastern Cape.

The offices closed seven years ago after there were incidents which compromised protection and security. A new digital approach will minimise corruption and ensure a high level of security.

New premises, mean renewed hope for refugees seeking asylum. Finally seven years after it closed its doors, the Port Elizabeth Refugee Reception office will be functioning again.

The new automated system promises to be more sustainable.

“These premises will be automated and not paper based. We believe that the paper process made corruption very easy and getting rid of it will make things more manageable and accountability will be possible. Processes should now run smoothly,”said  Mkhuseli Apleni , Home Affairs Director General.

The process of acquiring this building was a lengthy one. But safety, security and accessibility are priorities.

“I think this building is located in the best area cause it is central to everything. Anyone will be able to get to it and this area is very safe. I am glad that despite all the challenges we managed to get everything in place and it will be smooth and running soon. The biometric system will also make sure that the criminals remain out of the premises,” said Apleni.

The centre is expected to start running at the end of October. The Nelson Mandela University’s refugee centre was instrumental in reviving this service in the city.
