Professor Avinash Govindjee who is one of three people nominated for the shortlist to become a Judge in the Makhanda High Court in the Eastern Cape says it feels like he is living out a dream.
Govindjee is the Dean of the Law Faculty at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha.
As a highly respected academic, he has a passion for serving justice and inspiring his students.

Govindjee says it is a culmination of years of hard work and sleepless nights.
“It was a surreal feeling and I felt profound gratitude and a sense of humanity upon hearing the news. There are fantastic candidates competing for one of the three recommendations for the High Court in Makhanda and I feel very, very privileged that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) considered me to be a fitting candidate.”
“At this stage of my career, it is not the normal path to the bench but on reflection, there are a number of attributes of an academic that can serve the judiciary well,” adds Govindjee.
