Protesters were demanding that Gumede return to work

Another 15 supporters of eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede have been arrested following a scuffle with police at the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

They were part of a group who blocked the streets in front of the court where seven other supporters who were arrested earlier, were due to appear.

They have been released on a warning.

The protesters are demanding the immediate reinstatement of Gumede.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Wednesday that Gumede’s leave of absence relating to corruption charges has been extended by another 30 days.

Thursday afternoon the ANC’s provincial offices were closed after the protesters marched to the building.

Police used stun grenades and fired rubbers bullets to disperse the crowd that blocked the street, outside City Hall.

Gumede took special leave after being charged with fraud and corruption relating to a R208 million Durban Solid Waste Removal tender.

Several municipal offices remain closed after workers were forced out on Thursday morning.
