Reading Time: < 1 minute

Voter registration in the country’s prison has kicked off on Wednesday at more than 200 of the country’s corrections facilities and the department says it’s expecting voter registration of prisoners to go smoothly.

The department will in the next three days register inmates eligible to vote in this year’s general election.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Logan Maistry, says they are working closely with the Independent Electoral commission.

“The Department of Correctional Services is to facilitate the process of voter education, registration for inmates as well as give support to the IEC in executing their duties at correctional services. For instance to ensure that inmates are available on time for registration and on voting, to provide security and also provide the IEC with any info they might need.”

The IEC’s, Sy Mamabolo, says the prisoners have a constitutional right to vote.
