President Zuma to give national orders on Freedom day

The late ANC presidents, Chief Albert Luthuli and OR Tambo are among the recipients of the national orders to be bestowed by President Jacob Zuma on Friday 27 April, 2012. A new category in the Order of Mapungubwe in Platinum will be conferred to them. This order is normally reserved for presidents. Five other former ANC presidents will also be honoured.
Others include legendary musician, Johnny Clegg, Peter Mokaba and the late American civil rights leader, Edward Kennedy.
From political leaders to civil rights activists and people in the entertainment industry. Honours will be bestowed on those who have made an outstanding contribution in various fields. Two late ANC presidents among them and a new category has been added.
Director-General in the Presidency Dr. Cassius Lubisi says this is reserved for presidents, but they have added Platinum to honour their sterling contribution.

The OR Tambo is awarded to foreign nationals who have made a sterling contribution to this country

Musician Johnny Clegg, media personality Joe Thloloe and the late Peter Mokaba will also be honoured. The late John Gomas will be awarded for fighting for workers’ rights. And Frank Dutton for exposing apartheid hit squads in the violence in KZN
When explaining Dutton’s achievements Lubisi says: “He’s been awarded for his exceptional contribution to and achievement in his investigative work as a deidicated and loyal policeman, for exposing the apartheid Third Force.”
Late civil rights leader Edward Kennedy will receive the Companions of OR Tambo. Categories include Mendi, Ikhamnga, Luthuli, Baobab, Mapungubwe and the Companions of OR Tambo.
The OR Tambo is awarded to foreign nationals who have made a sterling contribution to this country.
