President Zuma meets NPA’s deadline

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Jacob Zuma‘s lawyers have confirmed that their client has met the National Prosecuting Authority‘s deadline and submitted representations on why he should not be prosecuted for fraud and corruption.

They say the representations were made late Wednesday night.

The representations were initially supposed to be submitted in November 2017, but National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams extended the deadline to January the 31st, 2018.

A ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed the application by Zuma and the NPA to appeal a high court ruling that the decision of the then NPA boss Mokotedi Mpshe to drop the corruption charges against him was irrational.

Abraham has given prosecutors two weeks in which to consider Zuma’s representations.

Thereafter he will decide whether to proceed with charging Zuma or not.
