President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet his Botswana counterpart Mokgweetsi Masisi in Pretoria on Friday morning. They are expected to discuss ways to strengthen the political and trade relations between the two countries.

The two leaders will preside over the fifth session of the South Africa-Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC). The meeting will evaluate progress on all outstanding projects and the implementation of commitments made at the last BNC.

Both presidents Ramaphosa and Masisi will co-chair the one-day SA-Botswana Bi-National Commission which was preceded by the ministerial meeting on Thursday.

Established in August 2012 with its inaugural session in 2013, the BNC has seen bilateral cooperation in various fields resulting in the signing of 38 agreements and memoranda of understanding.

Currently, South African companies have a huge presence in Botswana, as the two countries share nearly 30 years of bilateral relations.

Local companies operating in Gaborone are involved in mining, housing, food and beverages, construction, retail, banking and medical services among others.

During the last BNC, the two countries also discussed the challenges in fighting the coronavirus pandemic:
