President Ramaphosa to address the nation in a few days’ time

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on the relaxation of adjusted coronavirus lockdown regulations in a few days’ time.

He has been chairing a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) which includes representatives of government, political parties and the religious sector.

The meeting is assessing a range of factors including government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how its vaccine rollout programme is progressing.

The date for the President’s address has not yet been set.

Vaccines administered

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has released the latest coronavirus  vaccine data which shows the number of  COVID-19 vaccinations in South Africa is still way below the government’s target of 300 000 per day.

The ministry says more than 202 000 vaccines were administered in the latest 24 hour reporting period.

The total number of shots given to people is approaching 14 million.

Close to 6.8 million people are now fully vaccinated in South Africa.

South Africa has recorded 5 372 new COVID-19 cases, in the latest 24-hour reporting period, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 2 829 435.

A further 282 COVID-19-related deaths have also been reported, taking the country’s total fatalities since the pandemic outbreak to 83 899.
