South Africa has seen an increase in infections, driven by the new Omicron variant.

Earlier, Health Minister Doctor Joe Phaahla sought to explain why the National Coronavirus Command Council meeting is still under way.

He says the consultations which are in response to the detection of the Omicron variant of the virus have been extended to include various stakeholders to enable government to make an informed decision.

Several countries have imposed travel bans on at least nine countries in southern Africa including South Africa following the detection of the new variant.

“The various stakeholders have been very public in terms of their concerns so as we enter into these meetings we taking into considerations all those concerns but also as a proposal come related to what are the options because the fact of the matter is that the infection rate is rising we need to be conscious of that,” says Phaahla.
