Premier, stakeholders set to tackle Emfuleni water crisis

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Gauteng Premier David Makhura and officials from the Water Department and Rand Water are set to meet with the Emfuleni Local Municipality on Tuesday to try and resolve its water crisis.

Emfuleni owes Rand Water millions of rands in outstanding debt for bulk water supply.

Some residents have been without water for days as Rand Water has reduced water supply to the municipality by 40%.

Some have resorted to using water from hydrants.

Emfuleni Spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng says they have provided water tanks as a contingency measure.

“Since the past Friday, we have not had water in Emfuleni. This has affected high lying areas of Emfuleni and the likes of Debonia Park, Roshnee, Derderville, Rutervaal, Sharpeville, Evaton and Tshepong. The executive mayor will be meeting with Rand Water, Premier of Gauteng David Makhura as well as Nomvula Mokonyane to engage them on the lasting solution of this basic service.”
