Reading Time: < 1 minute

Motorists are warned to avoid parts of Lenasia South, in the south of Johannesburg, due to a violent protest.

Residents have blocked roads with burning tyres and other objects.

They have been protesting since Tuesday over power cuts.

Joburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says: “The protest began Tuesday night around 8pm, and then it stopped later in the evening. However it just flared up again Wednesday morning.”

He says: “The protesters are complaining of not having electricity. Motorists are advised to avoid Woulter and K53 as the is burning of tyres and the are rocks in the road. Motorists can use Golden highway as an alternative route.”

Officers are monitoring the situation.
