Pope raises his voice against economic and social exclusion

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Pope Francis says there is a need for greater equity especially in the case of those bodies with effective executive capability such as the United Nations (UN) Security Council, the Financial Agencies and the groups specifically created to deal with economic crisis.

The Pope was speaking during the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly where world leaders have gathered to discuss new 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

He says international financial agencies should care for the sustainable development of countries. “They should ensure that they are not subjected to oppressive lending systems which are far from promoting progress, subject people to mechanisms which create greater poverty, exclusion and dependence.”

He says justice is important in ensuring that the UN achieves its objectives. “The work of the United Nations, according to the principles set forth in the preamble in the first articles of its founding charter can be seen as the development and promotion of the rule of law based on the realisation that justice is an essential condition for achieving the ideal of the universal fraternity, in this context, it is helpful to recall, the limitation of power is an idea implicit in the concept of law itself.”

He raised his voice against economic and social exclusion. “Economic and social exclusion is a complete denial of human fraternity and a very grave offence against human rights.”

Migration is another issue that is expected to take centre stage at the gathering.Click video below for more on the story:
