Politicisation of COVID-19 origin study threatens global solidarity for pandemic fight

Some Western countries like the United States should respect science when it comes to the COVID-19 origin tracing rather than politicize it, and international solidarity for the fight against the pandemic is the top priority, said a Kenyan media outlet and an Italian scholar.

The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) on Wednesday published a commentary, saying that virus origin study should not be limited to one country and one region.

While the US and the West are continuing an endless debate on shifting the blame to China, China has facilitated the joint research on the global tracing of COVID-19 origins and given vigorous support to help countries worldwide combat the pandemic.

International solidarity for the fight against the disease and global equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines are the top priority, said the commentary.

While some countries continue to make a fuss over the COVID-19 origin tracing and play up “vaccine nationalism,” China has continuously donated vaccines and medical equipment to poor countries to assist them to overcome the pandemic, the commentary added.

Only by working together as early as possible to combat the pandemic can the world become better, said the commentary.

In addition, Roberto Cauda, professor of infectious diseases of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, said on Friday that the COVID-19 origin tracing should be scientific rather than be politicized.

“If we want to figure out the virus origin, we’d better believe in science rather than politics. Science cannot come to a standstill or be defiled. Scientific research is free,” said Cauda.

Cauda said he believes that China’s response to the pandemic is appropriate and accurate. He does not believe in COVID-19 conspiracy theories against China.
