Ndevu says councillors might be jostling for positions as they believe the party is growing.

Political analyst Zwelinzima Ndevu says there’s turmoil in some DA-run municipalities in the Western Cape as the party tries to cleanse itself ahead of the national elections next year.

Ndevu says this has been complicated by what he says is ill discipline among some of the councillors and mayors.

The DA mayors of Knysna, George, Matzikama on the West Coast and the Berg River have been removed, either through a vote of no confidence or party action.

Ndevu says councillors might be jostling for positions as they believe the party is growing.

“I think what could be the factor is ambition within individuals within the DA, people wanting to project themselves to be at particular positions at a particular time in the life of the party. People are not patient to wait until their time comes, they really want to push when they think there’s an opportunity to try their luck.”
