Sixteen inmates have escaped from the Johannesburg Central Correctional Centre also known as Sun City prison.

It’s suspected the inmates escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to make a hole in a wall before climbing through the fence.

The escaped prisoners are said to be awaiting trial inmates.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo has called for the public’s assistance in order to rearrest them.

He says this happened at about 3 am Monday morning.

“We have since launched a serious manhunt and are working together with the South African Police Services in order to ensure that all 16 are brought back,” says Nxumalo.
