Police in the Eastern Cape are searching for a woman after a foetus was found dumped in the leafy area of Greenbushes in Gqebera on Saturday.

The embryo, allegedly discovered with the umbilical cord still attached, is believed to be that of a boy.

Police Spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says a case of concealment of birth is under investigation.

“It is alleged that at about 13:30 a partially decomposed foetus was discovered about 5 meters from a sewerage outlet drain with the umbilical cord still attached. The drain is in a bushy area at the back of a quarry in Mission Road in Greenbushes. We appeal to anyone who can assist us in tracing the mother of this foetus or may be suspicious of any person who may have been recently pregnant and no longer has a child to contact SAPS,” says Naidu.
