Police prevent another land invasion attempt in Waterfall

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police have thwarted another attempt by land invaders to build shacks on a private property in Waterfall, north of Johannesburg.

Residents from neighbouring townships have been trying to occupy vacant land recently. Several people were arrested for trespassing.

In the early hours of Saturday morning residents of Tembisa and Alexandra arrived in Waterfall breaking down the gate and entering a private property, determined to make it their home.

The group says the informal settlements are inhabitable. Many have been waiting for RDP homes for over a decade. This is not the first attempt. Last month the group erected shacks in Waterfall which have since been demolished.

The group says it is still waiting for the City of Johannesburg to engage them. Huge signs and more fencing have been added to ensure the group does not return.

Police are still on the scene.
