A police officer has been shot and killed and six suspects arrested following a cash-in-transit heist in Hillbrow in Johannesburg this afternoon.

Six other people have been wounded including two security guards, two bystanders and two suspects. A gang of armed robbers ambushed a cash-in-transit van and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The police’s Brenda Muridili says, “While forensic investigations at the scene continue we can report that so far we have recovered seven firearms including rifles and pistols. Three motor vehicles have also been seized. Our members are fearless. They did not think twice before they confronted those brazen criminals. The acting national commissioner has commended the bravery of those who responded to the scene and on the same note expressed his shock at the killing of a police officer. We also wish the injured security officers and community members a speedy recovery.”
