Police monitor land invasion in South Peninsula

Reading Time: 1 minute

Metro Police have been deployed to Prince George Drive between Park Wood and Southfield in the South Peninsula where a group of people have started setting up shacks on an open piece of land.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says it is unclear where the group of people are from. He says their officers are monitoring the group for now.

In Phillipi East, police and other law enforcement agencies are also monitoring the situation after violence erupted Friday.

Residents set alight a car, vandalised a church and also damaged a sub-station. It is believed the chaos erupted when residents were evicted from a tract of land they had illegally occupied.

Meanwhile, the ANC’s Land Summit is currently underway at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg East of Johannesburg .

The Summit is expected to explore how the ruling party will be able to address the issue around land reform.

At its conference in December, the ANC resolved that it needs to amend the country’s constitution to allow for land expropriation without compensation.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is also in attendance, he will deliver the opening address. The Summit will run from Saturday until Sunday.
