KwaZulu-Natal police have been deployed around the province to ensure the smooth running of Wednesday’s by-elections.

Voting is underway in KwaMashu, where there have been several cases of political violence recently, as well as in the Vulamehlo, Nongoma, Umtshezi and Abaqulusi districts.

These are likely to be the last by-elections before the country goes to the polls on May 7.

KZN Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu says no incidents of political intolerance have been reported on Wednesday. “The police were deployed in KwaMashu sometime ago, they have been monitoring the situation and we have not seen any latest instability issues.”

Mchunu adds: “In Escourt, the ward where there is an election, is not one of those very difficult wards. I’m therefore happy by all means that the elections will be free and fair from the side of law enforcement.”
