Police Minister Bheki Cele has described criminal activity affecting students from TUT’s Soshanguve campuses as unacceptable.
Cele and National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole visited the campuses to assess the situation first hand.
Police have now launched a ‘Campus Safety Plan’ to improve student safety.
Frustrated by escalating crime,Tshwane University of Technology, students took the matter into their own hands.
They invited Police Minister Bheki Cele and his National Commissioner General Sitole to witness the criminal infested environment around their Soshanguve campuses first hand.
Students say they simply don’t feel safe on and off campus.
Just last week a female student was almost raped on campus but got saved by security.
Another major concern is that the campuses are surrounded by shebeens and rundown hostels that are believed to harbour criminals.
Student Michelle Moloto says: “The drinking establishments that are around campus are a problem because most of the time when students are studying at the library the music is loud and most students are robbed by gangsters that come to the taverns.”
Having seen the serious lack of security, police are promising to help in the form of a campus safety plan.
While it remains to be seen if the Campus Safety Plan by police will work, students have made their concerns clear they are not safe both on and off campus.
