‘Police lack intelligence system to tackle cash heists’

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Researcher at the Institute of Security Studies Gareth Newham says police are failing to successfully tackle the escalation of robberies and cash-in-transit heists because they lack an effective intelligence system.

His statement comes after yet another robbery in which two individuals had goods stolen from their vehicles outside the Clearwater Mall in Randburg, Johannesburg on Saturday.

Newham says the current change in management in law enforcement is a positive sign which could be a threat to criminals.

“Now, with the new head of the Hawks, and with the new National Commissioner appointed last year, and a new head of Crime Intelligence, they might be thinking that they their days are increasingly numbered, and might be more difficult in the future… so that could be behind this. They are beginning to operate with more impunity and are trying obviously to get as much as they can before the police start to improve their ability.”
