Police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of murder following the death of former professional footballer Marc Batchelor.

It is reported that Batchelor was shot by two men on motorbikes near Olivedale, north of Johannesburg on Monday night.

The motive for the killing is still unknown.

Batchelor remains one of the few players who played for the big three clubs in South Africa Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. The 49-year-old powerfully built striker also had a short spell at KV Oostende in Belgium.

Batchelor started his professional career as a striker, but was converted to a defender late in his career. He was part of the historic Pirates team that won the 1995 CAF Champions Cup, as well as the Super Cup the following year.

Batchelor also played for Moroka Swallows, Bidvest Wits, and Supersport United.
