Police have confirmed that they are investigating several cases including attempted murder and the contravention of the Disaster Management Act, following the funeral service of the former president of the uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans’ Association, Kebby Maphatsoe.

Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says a stray bullet hit an elderly woman and another hit a nearby house after mourners allegedly fired several shots into the air at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg on Sunday.

“We later received reports that a 75-year-old woman was shot in the leg allegedly during the time the shots were fired at the funeral. We opened a further case of attempted murder. So all in all we are investigating cases in terms of the Disaster Management Act regulations, in terms of the Firearms Control Act, for discharging a firearm in a built up area as well as malicious damage to property. We are also investigating a case of attempted murder,” says Naidoo.
