A manhunt is underway for sixteen inmates who have escaped from the Johannesburg Central Correctional Centre, also known as Sun City prison.

It is suspected that the inmates escaped around 3am on Monday morning through a pipe shaft and broke through a wall before climbing through a fence. Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo has appealed to the public for assistance.

The group was incarcerated at Medium A, a section which accommodates awaiting trial inmates. Among the 16, four face rape charges. Among them are Percy Mtimba Chauke, Thambanqa Msezane and Hlanganiso Sibanda.

Seven face murder charges. The remainder face robbery and house breaking charges.
