Police have reportedly used rubber bullets to disperse community members protesting outside the Sefateng Chrome Mine at Ga-Mampa village, outside Burgersfort, in Limpopo.

Residents have been protesting for weeks trying to stop the trucks from leaving the mine.

They are accusing the mining company of failure to fulfil promises such as water provisioning, maintenance of streets, compensation for the loss of agricultural land and relocated graves.

One of the protestors, Lovemore Munonoka, is accusing the police of being heavy-handed in dealing with the situation.

“The situation is not pleasing at all. It is very much tense, police came and they started shooting randomly at people. They were using rubber bullets and teargas. They arrested one trustee who was here and trying to explain. The way they were kicking and dragging him, I am sure he is injured. Five or six members of the community were gunned down using the rubber bullets.” says Munonoka.
