The man, believed to be the Chairperson of a taxi association in the area, was gunned down by unknown suspects.

Traffic came to a standstill following the shooting of a man and his son on the R603 in Umbumbulu, South of Durban.

The police have on Monday confirmed that the shooting claimed the lives of a 58-year-old Bonginkosi Makhanya and his 16-year-old son Melusi.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele said that a four-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle was unharmed. Makhanya – who is a taxi owner and chairperson of the Mbumbulu Taxi Association – was on his way to drop his children at school on Monday morning when the incident happened.

Mbhele said that the victims were shot multiple times.

“The information that we have on hand now as we’re still at the scene is that the 58 year old male was driving along Mbumbulu towards Isipingo with his 16 year old son as well as another 4 year old boy when they were attacked by unknown suspects which fired several shots towards them fatally wounding the 58 year old and his 16 year old.”

Mbhele said that the cause of the attack is unknown but the investigation is underway.

“The child was found unharmed but in a shocking condition under the seat where he was hiding. At the moment the motive of the killing is unknown but police are investigating a case of murder,” Mbhele said.
