PODCAST: Zooming into Your Community Part 5: Sophiatown, Gauteng

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Once a well-known cultural hub for black musicians, artists and politicians under the apartheid, Sophiatown is a suburb in the City of Johannesburg. It has changed names twice.

Also known as Kofifi, it was destroyed, rebuilt and renamed Triomf after the Native Resettlement Act of 1954 under the apartheid system…before returning to its original name of Sophiatown in 2006.

The suburb is part of Ward 86, which includes areas like Greymont and Albertsville, and is led by the Democratic Alliance.

According to Census 2011,  Sophiatown has a population of over 5 000 people and 1 595 households.  Six percent of the people in the ward are unemployed, 29% are not economically active and 1% is discouraged from looking for work. Only 45% of the people have completed matric.

In this weekly feature, SABC News captures voices of communities about their experience with service delivered by their municipality.

This week, Digital News producer Lebo Tshangela speaks to the community leaders and residents of Sophiatown.
